A flat tire in Minneapolis does not always mean you need a tow. If you have a usable spare, no other wheel damage, and a safe place to work, roadside tire-change assistance may be enough. If you have no usable spare, a damaged wheel, or a vehicle stopped too close to moving traffic, explain the situation to dispatch so they can assess whether towing is needed.
For help in Minneapolis, St. Paul, or nearby Twin Cities communities, call MSP Towing & Recovery at 612-391-7272. Share your location and vehicle condition so dispatch can confirm current availability and an estimate.
Get safely stopped before checking the tire
If you suspect a flat while driving, keep control of the vehicle and avoid abrupt steering or braking. Move out of the travel lane as safely as possible and turn on your hazard lights. Do not keep driving to your destination on a visibly flat tire.
Call 911 first if anyone is injured, the vehicle is blocking active traffic, or there is immediate danger. Do not step into traffic to inspect the wheel or retrieve equipment. Follow emergency personnel’s directions.
A freeway shoulder on I-94 or I-35W can leave very little room between the vehicle and passing traffic. Having a jack and spare does not make that location safe for a tire change. Tell dispatch if the flat is on the traffic-facing side, the shoulder is narrow, or the vehicle is on a slope.
When roadside tire-change assistance may be enough
A spare-tire change may be an option when the vehicle is parked on firm, level ground with safe working space, the spare is suitable and usable, and the wheel has no apparent damage that prevents replacement.
Before calling, check your owner’s manual or spare-tire storage area if you can do so safely. Do not assume the vehicle includes a spare. Some vehicles carry an inflator or sealant kit instead. Tell dispatch what you have, including any locking wheel-nut key.
If a temporary spare is fitted, follow the speed, distance, inflation, and vehicle-specific restrictions in the owner’s manual and on the spare. Arrange tire service rather than treating the spare as a permanent repair.
When a tow may be needed
Explain these situations when requesting help:
- There is no spare, or the spare is flat, damaged, or unsuitable.
- More than one tire is damaged.
- The wheel appears bent or the vehicle has visible suspension damage.
- The tire problem followed a collision or a hard curb or pothole impact.
- The vehicle cannot be safely worked on where it is stopped.
- The vehicle does not roll or steer normally.
Dispatch can assess the information and discuss available service options. A tire change alone cannot resolve wheel, steering, or suspension damage.

What to tell dispatch
Give the road name, direction of travel, nearest exit or intersection, and whether you are in a lot, driveway, ramp, or freeway shoulder. Include the vehicle year, make, model, which tire is affected, and whether you have a usable spare.
For a parking ramp, share the facility name, entrance, posted clearance, level, and stall or pillar number. Mention any gate or access restriction. Our Minneapolis parking-ramp towing guide explains why these details matter.
If you need towing, have a destination ready and check whether the repair facility can accept the vehicle. For a fuller checklist, see what to tell a tow truck dispatcher.

Check tire pressure before the next trip
An October vehicle check is a useful opportunity to inspect the spare as well as the tires on the road. NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure monthly when tires are cold—after the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours. Use the pressure specified on the vehicle’s tire-information label or in the owner’s manual. A pressure warning system does not replace those checks. See NHTSA’s tire-safety guidance.
Common flat-tire questions
Can I request help without a spare?
Yes. Tell dispatch before service is arranged. Without a usable spare, towing to a tire shop may be the appropriate option.
Can a sealant kit repair every flat?
No. Follow your kit’s instructions and your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. Do not assume a kit can handle sidewall damage or a damaged wheel.
How much will help cost?
Contact dispatch for an estimate based on your location, vehicle, access, and required service. Describe the spare and any visible damage so the estimate reflects the situation.
